I don’t know what the boffins at Microsoft are smoking, but they have apparently filed for and received a patent that is tantamount to Page Up/Page Down functionality. According to the patent’s own words, it covers a ‘method and system for navigating paginated content in page-based increments,’ with an example of pressing either Page Up or Page Down keys to navigate between the next or previous page. Interesting bit of news, but no way will it be revolutionary. What do you think Microsoft has up their sleeves with this patent?

Add mood lighting to this weekend’s evening backyard soiree with some Mason jars, LED lights, and coin cell batteries. The Evil Mad Scientists DIY site describes how to make your own temporary outdoor lighting with cheap supplies and easy assembly. Tape the LED cell to the battery to light it up, then mount that inside the jar top and set it out. This setup is temporary (and will burn out eventually if you don’t disassemble) but it looks like an easy way for even beginner do-it-yourselfers to light up a dark pathway without investing in a pricey outdoor system.

ScreenRecycler allows you to use your other computer as a second monitor.
Many Mac users have a second computer sitting right next to their main computer on their desk including a nice display. ScreenRecycler now enables you to use this spare computer as second display for your Mac. You can even use an idle machine for that purpose.
It’s like a dual monitor setup without the need to buy an additional monitor.
Just start ScreenRecycler on your Mac then connect to ScreenRecycler via VNC from your second machine.
Recycle your old Mac and Windows machines !

News is just out of a new way to jailbreak your iPhone, and this time the tool is specifically designed to work ‘quickly and easily, without requiring a full restore.’ Quickpwn has been released as a beta, intended to complement the main PwnageTool. It works with iPhones and iPod’s running 2.0.1 firmware, and operates very quickly without needing iTunes to rebuild/restore your device afterwards. This beta version is basically feature-complete, but lacks a ‘funky UI’ (they’re adding that soon) and is currently windows only (other OS’s are ‘coming soon’). It’s available here. Keep your eyes open for a complete version (though remember that even though it’s development software, it’s apparently ‘impossible for this to permanently damage your device’). [iPhone-Dev.org]

Twitter is starting to limit how many other Twitterers any one person can follow. While the number varies based on different factors, for most people (other than Robert Scoble) the ceiling seems to be 2,000. This has caused some consternation among bloggers (blogsternation?). You’d think Twitter was limiting free speech. But it’s not. It’s trying to limit spam and perhaps this will help with its scaling issues as well.

Qingbar probably hopes that its MP101 Mini Projector for the iPod/iPhone gets picked up en masse by business travelers looking to turn their seat backs into mini-movie theaters, but we think the image quality might deter all but the blindest travelers from abandoning their tiny screens. According to the specs and the image below, what you’re going to get with this portable projector is a 5W LED (with a lumens of 10-15), a 20,000 hour lamp life, and projected image from 15″ to 27″. It’s neat, but with no price the ’sub par’ headline stays put.
